Will AI “photography” and video become ubiquitous? Will it affect your memory of the past? Your imagination of the future? What’s your favorite AI slop?

During Gabe’s Hypercinema Lab opening last week, Runway’s Chief Design Officer Alejandro Matamala Ortiz finished his presentation with this slide.

It’s a powerful and efficient tool for the creative community. One of the features Alejandro demonstrated was how stylists can test whether actors would look good in different outfits without having them try anything on. Filmmakers can scout locations and use AI to visualize them in different seasons. As a filmmaker and artist, I sometimes worry about how the youth will perceive digital media. We grew up consuming content that was authentically built on human creativity. As of right now, we can still tell what’s generated and what’s not. But what about the future generation, who will grow up surrounded by content that’s AI-generated?

AI is already capable of producing realistic works built from existing materials. If we’re only recycling what’s already been made, where do we go from there? I imagine AI-generated content will continue to surge until it reaches a peak, after which people will crave authenticity again. Sometimes I wonder if I’ll start dreaming in the AI art style.

This is my favorite AI slop:
